Bates Battaglia
"Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow"

Before the trim, at an earlier Canes game, photo by moi. :)The new 'do, from the Hurricanes' website

I was going to call this page "Bates Battaglia, Smarter Than The Average Hair", but with his recent decision to get a wee bit of a trim, the above title seemed somewhat more appropriate. :-) Anyway, given that Bates has taken up residence as my second favorite Hurricanes player (given his speed, puck handling skills, and the way he wears his hockey socks OVER his skates *grin*), right behind my all-time favorite player, Arturs Irbe, I thought I'd put together a small webpage for him. It seems to be in somewhat unique company; I did a quick search before I started to see what was already out there in hockey fan based pages, and while Bates' name came up many times in "official" sports pages (ie: ESPN, NHL.com, etc.), there weren't a lot of "unofficial" Battaglia pages out there.

So without further ado, let's get going, shall we?

Photos:

I've shot a BUNCH, especially now that I've gone digital this year; I've been snapping quite a few at each game/event that I've attended (averaging about 4 or 5 disks worth per game), and usually managed to catch Bates in at least one per game, some of which have definitely come out better than others. You can find the photo page here.

MPG Clips:

That digital camera I invested in last May? It also shoots short mpg movie clips. Haven't caught a lot of Battaglia game footage, but did pick up a few great clips at the Super Skills Competition in January. I've got the whole event posted on my Super Skills page, but to make things easier, here are the direct links to the Battaglia clips themselves.

|| the puck handling event || fastest skater event ||

goalie event, clip 1 || goalie event, clip 2 || breakaway event with Francis and Gelinas ||

I recently caught him in two clips from the warm-ups at the Washington Capitals game on February 24th. In both, he starts out at the opposite end of the ice and ends up skating directly across from me on the near side of the ice.

In the above clip (375kb - 16 seconds), he tosses a puck over the glass to someone
across the way before skating around...

...and in the second clip below (204kb - 9 seconds), does a little fancy
puck-work before skating past my lens. :)

And at the Oilers game this afternoon, I picked up one more of Bates during the pre-game warm-up skate. Large frame, this time. (1.11mb - 12 seconds)

From the Canes/Pens game on 4/8/01 - Some great Jumbotron footage of the "Ask the Canes" segment. Today's question? "Who has the best looking hair on the team?" He clearly LOVED that one. Final score? 3 votes for Bates, 1 for Ron Francis, 1 for Jeff O'Neill, and 1 vote specifically NOT for Jeff O'Neill. LOL. (His comments, as soon as I can get them there, will show up on his Quotes page, in the Ask the Canes Jumbotron section.)

The photo link will take you over to my idrive. When you get there, just type in "canesgoalie" as the idrive to visit, click on "shared folders", and it's in the "Penguins Clips April 8" directory.

Hockey Cards:

While I don't have nearly the number of Battaglia cards that I do Irbe cards (which number over 300 now, as long as I've been collecting THOSE), I've got some, with more coming in every day. Thank you EBAY. :) I've set them up two ways, depending on how much time you have, and which browser you're using: For IE users with some time to kill, try this page. It takes longer to load, but it'll allow you to see what the back sides of the cards look like just by clicking on them. In a hurry, or don't use IE? Use THIS page; it loads smaller, faster loading, thumbnails, which will bring up a larger version of each card individually as you click on them.

He Said, They Said...

What Bates has been quoted as saying, as well as quotes about Bates from other people. Various and sundry things from the Internet, the newspaper, Hurricanes write-ups, etc. Oh, and a few short bits from the "Ask the Canes" Jumbotron segments. You'll find the quotes here.
